Mark John Corkhill was shot in Dam Wood, Croxteth.
He had been shot several times in the legs and bled to death. It was thought that he might have staggered some yards in the wood before collapsing.
He was later found by a dog walker at about 1.30pm on 18 February 2008.
He was last seen alive the previous day, Sunday 17 February when he left his home in Croxteth which he shared with his mother.
He was known to the police as a petty criminal.
Several people were arrested, but no charges were made. Three of the people arrested were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm.
